Embracing the Unexpected (9/2019)
Show Run: September 13th – October 9th
Encaustic artist and jewelry maker Anne Strout, who lives in West Falmouth, is a mixed media artist working primarily from her well-equipped barn studio (also in West Falmouth). Her granddaughter, Fiona Aberle— herself a young and budding artist—shares a corner of the studio with her. Strout was born and raised in the Boston suburbs and has lived in Maine since 1978. She has been taking yearly art classes and advanced workshops ever since her first oils class, taken when she was just eleven years old. Her multidisciplinary works have been shown in special exhibits and established galleries throughout New England. Anne is also a participating member of the Union of Maine Visual Artists, The Kennebec Valley Art Association, the Maine Crafts Association, the Ogunquit Art Association and International Encaustic Artists.
Abstractionist Denis Boudreau, who also lives in West Falmouth, was born in Maine and studied geology at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. Drafted into the Army in 1967, he served in Viet Nam, receiving two Purple Hearts. After his discharge, Denis enrolled in Concept School of the Visual Arts, concentrating on painting and sculpture. In 1985 Denis was diagnosed with glaucoma, a condition which eventually rendered him permanently blind. And yet, to the delight of everyone around him, he continues to work on abstract paintings. He has exhibited in group exhibits and one-man shows, in and well-beyond Maine, for many years. His work can be found in public and private collections throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.
Abstract and figurative artist Roland Salazar Rose, who lives in Biddeford, works in two countries—Mexico and the United States—each of which presents Rose with very different and yet always rewarding challenges as an artist. It has also resulted in two diverse bodies of work— the Maine Years and the Mexico Years—each of them illustrating how the distinctive artistic atmosphere of those countries has come to be represented in his paintings and drawings. Rose has studied at the Art Students League, the National Academy of Design, the Ecole Superior des Beaux Arts, the University of Paris and New York University. Rose, who is the proud founder of the Maine artists’ Space/Danforth Gallery in Portland, has earned many awards for his work in the arts over the years, among them a recent grant from the Maine Arts Commission for the production and publication of an e-pub entitled Solar Flares and Salazar—an Art/Science Collaboration (2018-19). Rose is represented by a wide-ranging list of galleries including the Aura Galerias in México City, the Mario Peliiza Arte in Milan, Italy, and the Miranda Gallery in Laguna Beach, California.
Author, artist and musician Ross Alan Bachelder, who was born in Michigan and has lived in Berwick, Maine, since 1974, has been active in Seacoast New Hampshire, Southern Maine and elsewhere in northern New England for more than forty years. He’s performed solo recitals and exhibited his drawings, paintings, photographs and found object assemblages in several northern New England cities. He’s the founder of the Seacoast Moderns in Kittery, Maine. His first book, released in 2016, is Happy Dawg Walks the Sad Man: the Remarkably Varied Adventures of a Confirmed Arts Multiple. His second book, a collection of short stories entitled REVENGE: Tales Best Read in the Twilight hours, will be released in November. He’s performed as a flutist in the Afternoon Tea Series at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and, in 2011, at the opening reception for New Zealand artist Susan Harrison-Tustain in Tauranga, New Zealand.
